The Power of Love
Exploding our hearts. In the best way.
Today, our tiny, bold move is love. We can look around our world and wonder where all the love went. Or, we can play our part in generating the love we seek. The love our families and communities deserve. The love that keeps our home fires burning, and heals our lives. Divine Love grabbed me by my heels last weekend. Like the Hulk grabbed Loki, and thrashed his ass in the first Avengers. Today, my hope is you can feel, and then let this love move you. It’s what my best friend’s romance did for me. There’s a fun video, and a wild, 3-min soundtrack. Apparently, when you officiate a Jewish-Ukrainian wedding, it’s customary to write and produce a 3-minute rock opera about the couple!? Hop on the Love Rollercoaster. Let’s party.
I drove my Rad Van around Parsippany, NJ. I was cranking Power of Love by Huey Lewis and the News. I was channeling all that Marty McFly, Back to the Future energy. Why? Cuz it’s Summer, and in moments, my life is brimming with love— and that, is awesome.
In other moments, my life is rewriting itself. New storylines emerging, stitched together with grief, and scar tissue. And as our healing comes in waves like Summer storms, so does our joy.
I was in town to officiate a best friend’s wedding. My soul sister Emiliya was marrying her soulmate, Shimon. There’s something deeply inspiring about true love. I kept warning my traveling companion, and 15-year old daughter Frankie. This wedding was going to be the raddest, the sickest, the most loving and powerful event of the Summer. Maybe, of all time. Why?
Because this is how Emiliya does things. How her and I tend to design things. We ratchet up the love, ratchet up the joy. Emiliya and I co-emceed an event together called Camp Good Life Project for five years. It was hosted, and brought to life by our mutual friends and mentors Jonathan and Stephanie Fields. We had the privilege of playing with 300-400 sober adults for 12-18 hours a day. Emiliya and I learned so much from one another, by (hopefully) helping those guests feel seen, and loved. Emiliya endured, and eventually thrived through incredible loss as a young woman. First her brother, then each of her parents. She owned a successful business by her mid-twenties— New York City’s The Flourishing Center— where she has certified many thousands of change agents in Positive Psychology. The science of human thriving.
Emiliya, like me, is an off-the-charts Enneagram Seven. We are the fun-loving party animals of the Enneagram system. She reminds me not to underestimate the power of the Seven. Sometimes constant joy and positivity may appear like a mask, or spiritual bypassing. For Emiliya, (and for me on my best days) our joy, and the love we kick to the world sits atop a deeper ocean of resilience. We claim our joy again, and again. Through loss, grief, and by choosing Permission 3: to Glow in the Dark. Sevens ask, “if not me, then who? God told us to leave a light on.”
I’m excited to share these fun moments from last weekend. Pay close attention to Emiliya’s new beloved husband, Shimon. This dude is off the charts. His performance is totally ad-lib, and he is a natural! Lol.
